Laurens, Trainee Procurement

Why did you choose the Statkraft International Trainee Programme?
My background is in Industrial Engineering and Supply Chain Management and I worked as a Demand Planner in the Netherlands. When I moved to Norway, I decided to take this opportunity – and I have never looked back since. I would never trade this experience for a regular job anywhere else. I love my job and don’t see it as work.
I like being challenged. If things stay the same for too long, I get bored. Getting out of my comfort zone is something that motivates me.
Tell us about your trainee experience so far!
I've done amazing things, from working in remote locations in the mountains of Norway to attending high-level conferences.
My first rotation was in Category Management where I helped set up of procurement strategies for hydro power in Norway at a high strategic level. My second role was within Project Procurement where I did selection and evaluation of suppliers and tenders as well as contract management with follow-up of project-related challenges.
Currently I work for the international team in Florianópolis, Brazil, on the bid evaluation for a big solar farm to be build. This is the best thing!
Any learning that will be useful in your future career?
I didn't know any Norwegian before I moved. But since I work with Norwegian hydropower, I pushed myself to learn the language. It has opened many opportunities professionally.
